Boston's on the boardPALM BEACH GARDENS, FL The first two weeks of TGL are coming in fast and full of incredible matches. It has only been EIGHT days since Season 2 kicked off, and already we are playing Match 3, which features a repeat trip to the SoFi Center by our defending league champions, the Atlanta Drive GC. The Peach State lineup will face off against the boys from The Bay GC. Viewers can catch the match tonight on ESPN at 5:00 pm ET. I know the first week's schedule has been a little random, but those days are behind us. Twelve of the 13 remaining matches (including tonight) will fall on a Monday or Tuesday night. If you missed Boston Common Golf's win over Los Angeles GC in Match 2 on Friday night, it was a sensational TGL showcase. Similar to Match 1, it came down to the final hole. BCG made seven sub-par scores and controlled the hammer dynamic. Congrats to the club from Beantown for their first TGL win! The format, course, and starting lineupsBoth Joe and I will be inside the arena tonight. If those first two matches are any indication, this bout is going to have an incredible ending. The Bay GC and Atlanta Drive GC last met in the TGL semifinals. TBGC was the #2 seed in the playoffs, while ADGC was the #3 seed. Atlanta won impressively 9-3. The Bay didn't make a key putt for the first 13 holes, and the hammer tandem of Ben Helmrath (ADGC Manager) and Patrick Cantlay doubled down on San Francisco's finest. The Bay GC is the only team to hand the ADGC a loss in Season 1. In the middle match of the President's Day triple header, The Bay beat Atlanta Drive 6-5. That win was fueled by two Wyndham Clark H2H points in the final four holes of the matinee match. Those same two combatants are lined up again on this week's order of play. Atlanta Drive has the honor this week, and who better to lead us off tonight than Mr. TGL himself, Billy Horschel.โโโโโโโโโโโโโโ They moved Stinger to Singles! Michael Thorbjornsen is the only player to successfully navigate the low-trajectory tee shot. How low do you have to go? Thor's 3-iron peaked at 17' off the ground! Cenote remains as the twelfth hole, but Gil Hanse's design Stone & Steeple moves into the final slot on the scorecard and becomes Hole 15. How about the new Greenzone? Has the new TGL green complex changed the game? In the first two matches, the effect of successful scrambling was less, while sub-par scoring has become more important. We thought scoring would increase on the new putting surface, and it has. Both of the winning teams in the first two matches made more birdies and eagles. That sounds obvious, but with the hammer rules, you can be opportunistic and still win. Truth be told, we haven't seen a ton of opportunities around the green. That's going to change this evening. The collection of holes for tonight share a 61% GIR success rate. If that holds, we will see more scoring chances from off the green than we have in the first two matches combined! I mentioned it in the bullet points. This is our first match scorecard under 6,000 yards. The Bay GC is definitely the longer of the two teams. In Season 1, ร berg and the guys were ranked second in average driving distance. I'm just not sure length is an advantage inside the dome. Too many teams have won with great putting and hammer moxie. I worry about Cantlay and Company when it comes to the double-down moments. We have an incredible card and layout. Let's get to the match breakdown. Match breakdownMatch 3This is a tough match to break down. These teams split their two matches in Season 1. The Bay GC was the best team in Triples play, while Atlanta Drive GC was the best Singles team last year. Is one format more important than the other? Tonight will certainly add another chapter to this weekly TGL debate. If we only looked at TGL through an analytical lens, it would be tough to determine why ADGC is so heavily favored. The Bay GC finished Season 1 ranked first in driving accuracy, GIRs, shorter putt efficiency (makes) inside 10', and Triples holes (and points) won. To compound the driving advantage, TBGC is not only the most accurate team off the tee, but the second longest in the league behind Boston Common! When Min Woo Lee, Wyndham Clark, and Ludvig ร berg are in The Bay's lineup, no team is longer. Atlanta Drive gets it done differently. They led the league last season in scrambling, medium putt efficiency (makes) between 10-30', and Singles points won. You may notice they did not win the most H2H holes. Never forget, ADGC is team hammer. Between Manager Ben Helmrath and Patrick Cantlay, they have tortured the rest of the TGL with their two-point tactics. TBGC's Manager Josh Seiple better be prepared for some serious gamesmanship. ADGC finished 13 points ahead of TBGC in hammer differential in Season 1. Forget what they did to them in the semifinals. In Match 1 of Season 2, ADGC did it again, gaining another positive three-point differential over New York GC. The fact is, when you have two teams so evenly matched, there needs to be an edge, and the Atlanta Drive has certainly found theirs. Handicapping this match, I believe ADGC has the edge on hammer points. Is that enough to win? Probably not, and I don't want to lay that much money with those odds without another strong differentiator. Atlanta Drive played nine of tonight's 15 holes last Sunday in Match 1. Not last season, Gotterup and Horschel played them last week! Every odd hole listed in tonightโs Triples format was used in the Match 1 scorecard. Think for a moment how comfortable you are at your home course. These guys were just in the arena, and they will play 60% of the same holes. Four of the Singles holes are the same, including four of the final they play! Those who have already seen the tee shot on Stinger (Hole 11) realize what an advantage this will be. Chris Gotterup's low trajectory is far better for the overhanging rock tee shot test than Ludvig's lever and launch sky-high tee shots. One or two holes in the closing six H2Hs, and two helpful hammers are how Atlanta Drive GC will take Match 3 tonight and a stranglehold on first place in the league until we see them again in February. Team Atlanta Drive is heavily favored on the odds board. Last Season, they were ranked first in total H2H points won. Can they build a second campaign around the Singles format?
Match 3 is on ESPN tonight at 5:00 pm ET. It's an early start, so get those smartphones and TVs turned on early.
