The John Deere Classic held our attention last week as we entered the final round with an outright pick in second place and plenty of placements to cash in on. Scott Stallings came in fourth and didn't close the deal for us, but we did go 7-1 on our prop and placement predictions. Even "live" add Cam Davis after round one cashed a Top 20 with his 8th place finish. It pays to read the entire newsletter.
The Rennaissance Club is hosting its fourth Genesis Scottish Open and this one will be special. Based upon the list of competitors, the strength of field for Scotland's Open Championship will be the highest ever for a regular DP World/European Tour tournament.
The collaboration between the DP World Tour and PGA Tour that brought this brainchild to life is reaping rewards in just the first year. The co-sanctioned event is sponsored by both tours and in advance of the 150th Open Championship, next week plans to give Scotland a sensational two-week celebration of fantastic golf. Starting with the weather and course conditions, here's what can we expect this week in North Berwick, Scotland:
The Par 71, 7,293-yard layout will test the best. They have four Par 5's, five Par 3's and nine Par 4's. Those Par 4's can get pretty long as five of them measure over 450 yards. Throw in three Par 3's over 200 yards and you better bring some ball speed with you. This is the fourth time in a row the event will be played at TRC. The previous three editions:
We have had a busy two months on the PGA Tour. On top of travel, many of the world's elite are competing in the JP McManus Pro-Am on July 4-5. This invitational event only takes place every five years, so the field is stacked. Even Tiger Woods is playing! Will fatigue play a factor for some of these guys at this point, what skills will it take to contend and who will win?

"Great Scott!"
I really like this layout by Tom Doak. He's one of my favorite modern architects and any chance I get to play one of his works, I'm in! The Rennaissance Club is certainly one of his best and between the subtleness of the green surfaces and thought-provoking tee shots, the winner this week will have contended with a very well-rounded skill set.
It starts off the tee. Looking at the leaderboards from the last three Scottish Opens at TRC results prove that power helps. With four reachable Par 5's, a drivable Par 4, and three Par 3's over 200 yards, having speed helps considerably. With the firm and fast conditions, players will experience this week it will help shorter players hit it longer, but the bombers will be even closer. There's no substitute for power in the modern game and this course rewards it.
Strokes Gained Approach will get a lot of attention this week, but TRC has large greens. In the two July editions everyone in the Top 25 hit over 70% of their greens in regulation. The contenders hit over 80%. So getting to the green isn't the key, capitalizing when you do from closer proximity means more to my educated eye. I love guys who routinely hit the ball close. The winner will need 25+ birdies this week to claim the trophy so the more chances, the better.
Transitioning to slower greens every summer for the Open is easier for some players than others. I took a good look at three-putt avoidance in this group. With such high GIR numbers, players will be putting a lot. Whoever loses the least amount of strokes on those putting surfaces is someone I like.
With such a strong strength of the field, we need to look at players above a certain caliber. This event is equivalent to an Arnold Palmer Invitational, Memorial, or the Genesis at Riviera. Big-time fields bring out big-time players. It certainly has been the case in 2022 and I expect that trend to continue this week.

The cutline is coming The FedEx Cup Fall has just three weeks remaining. This eight event sprint to qualify for 2025 TOUR cards takes us to Los Cabos, Mexico. For the second year in a row, the World Wide Technology Championship will be contested at El Cardonal at Diamante. Designed by Tiger Woods in 2014, this seaside setting allowed record scoring in 2023. Erik van Rooyen won last year by two strokes over Camilo Villegas at 27 under par! Speaking of Camilo, the PAC Chairman made the...
Keeping score Read The Line has posted 1,171 individual wagers this year producing a +18.3% net return. Outrights are the ultimate prize and our record of 36 wins since January of 2022 is incredible. But when they don't hit, the key is to balance our betting card with live in tourney bets. This weekend was a perfect example. Kurt Kitayama played well at the ZOZO and finished fifth, but that won't cash any outright tickets. As Kurt contended, we also added 10 live H2H matchups in rounds two,...
The Postman delivers in Vegas! Decisions, decisions I sat down with Smylie Kaufman for his podcast earlier this week. Those who watched the Shriners heard his voice covering the event. We discussed the weather in Vegas and number of other things. Heading into TPC Summerlin, we were all focused on the weather, wind, and wave advantage. A substantial delay on Friday morning may have altered the results slightly, but in the end those who played the PM/AM wave had a stroke average approximately...
